Providing Flexibilities with Large-Scale BESS in Industries and Datacenters

Synopsis

Growing penetration of inverter-based renewable generation in our electricity grids lead to an increased need for intra-day flexibilities (x2 until 2030) whilst threatening grid stability (see incident in Spain). Besides stand-alone BESS or co-located BESS, we believe that Behind-The-Meter BESS can also play an important role in this scenario, in particular when it comes to power hungry datacenters for which grid connexions are become the major hurdle for growth. We will look at the challenges and opportunities in this context and illustrate, through first real-world examples, different operation schemes, and depict a path for future developments under technical, economic and regulatory angles.
